New Delhi: The US has stepped up pressure on Tehran to curb its nuclear programme, slapping fresh sanctions on more than 20 Iranian companies and major banks.

It has also branded Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard Corps and its Qods force a supporter of terrorism.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Iran will have to pay for what she called irresponsible behavior, adding that the US was committed to a diplomatic solution with Tehran.

Among the Iranian banks affected are Bank Melli, the country's largest bank.

The US also said that Iran is producing and exporting ballistic missiles and backing Shiite insurgents in Iraq, the Taliban in Afghanistan, the Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza.

The US is pushing for a third UN Security Council sanctions resolution against Tehran over its nuclear programme but China and Russia are opposing the move.
