Dubai: Seven Indian workers, all of them believed to be from Hyderabad, died while several others were reported missing after a massive fire destroyed an old building in Deira locality in Dubai on Tuesday.
According to local reports, the fire started early on Tuesday morning but its real cause was not known till late evening. Four workers are reported to be missing and a search was on at the site.
Brigadier Mehdi Abdul Al Jalil of Dubai Police told the local media that most people died when the ceiling of the single-storey building collapsed due to fire.
The police also feared more casualties as the building, located close to electronics shops in the area, housed hundreds of workers.
"Fire was not that big and it was put out in a couple of hours but the building was very old and the ceiling collapsed while they were sleeping," Al Jalil said.
Venu Rajamony, India's Consul-General in Dubai, has assured all possible help for the victims.
"I have sent some officers to the scene, but as of yet we have not gotten any information. We will of course help the victims and their family members in any way we can," he was quoted as saying.
